The Flesh Sculptor

鬼手Guǐshǒu

Name via press

The healer who revives Soul after his heart is pierced — “with a fatal condition: you have exactly Sixty-Six Days to live”, as Wccftech reports the State of Play. Chinese coverage names the healer 鬼手 and the technique 毒心之术 (“poison-heart art”); that the two names belong to one figure is likely but unconfirmed.

What the name means

CharacterPinyinMeaning
鬼guǐghost; uncanny, beyond human skill (as in 鬼斧神工)
手shǒuhand; a skilled practitioner (as in 高手)

The real culture behind it

In Chinese, 鬼 often means uncanny rather than dead: the idiom 鬼斧神工, “ghosts’ axes and gods’ craft”, praises workmanship too fine to be human. 手 is the hand, and by extension a practitioner, as in 高手, “master”. “Ghost Hand” is a name for a craftsman whose skill unsettles; the English “Flesh Sculptor” takes the same craftsman’s angle and makes it bodily.

Chinese literature’s best-known heart-surgery tale is in the Liezi: the legendary physician Bian Que gives two patients a drugged wine (毒酒, literally “poison wine”), leaves them as if dead for three days, opens their chests and exchanges their hearts, then wakes them with a divine medicine. One reading, ours: a healer whose cure is a “poison-heart art” stands squarely in that tradition — a miracle with poison at its centre.
