Zuo Shang
左殇Zuǒ Shāng
Soul’s childhood blood brother (结义兄弟) and rival; their final duel, shown in the August 2026 State of Play, leaves Soul stabbed through the heart. The Chinese name comes from Chinese press, and actor Zhang Xince (张欣策) gives Zuo Shang his face and performance.
What the name means
| Character | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 左 | zuǒ | left; also a surname (Zuo Qiuming, Zuo Zongtang) |
| 殇 | shāng | to die before adulthood; in Qu Yuan’s “Guo Shang”, the war dead |
The real culture behind it
殇 is one of the gravest characters in Chinese. The Shuowen jiezi defines it as dying before adulthood, and the ritual classics grade it by age: a death between 16 and 19 is a 长殇, an “elder untimely death”. Qu Yuan’s hymn 国殇 (“Guo Shang”) in the Nine Songs turns the word to warriors fallen for their state, and ends by saying their souls (魂魄) become “heroes among the ghosts”.
左 is a real surname (the historian Zuo Qiuming, the Qing statesman Zuo Zongtang) that also means “left”. One reading, ours: beside 魂, the name completes a pair — a soul and an early death, both found in that one poem.
The two are 结义 sworn brothers, the bond of Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei’s Peach Garden oath in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, who vowed to die on the same day. Sworn brothers who wound each other’s hearts turn that ideal inside out (again, our reading).
