The real culture behind it

In Chinese ritual a bell is a voice for the unseen. Daoist priests ring a hand bell, the 帝钟 or “Three Purities bell” (三清铃), to summon deities and scatter evil; in the folklore of western Hunan, corpse-drivers (湘西赶尸) lead the dead home on foot by the sound of a bell; and Buddhist pagodas hang bells from every eave.

The Songs of Chu contains a whole poem called 招魂, “Summoning the Soul”, which calls a wandering spirit back home with the refrain “O soul, come back!” (魂兮归来). A hero named 魂, Soul, who returns again and again to a bell to be restored, sits very comfortably in that tradition; the reading is ours, not S-GAME’s.
