Lady Inanis
虚空Xūkōng
An “ethereal” figure whom Shacknews’ review describes as a mysterious guide and benefactor. Her Chinese name follows the official store pairing of “Inanis’ Dreamscape” with 虚空梦境.
What the name means
| Character | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 虚 | xū | empty, insubstantial; Daoist stillness |
| 空 | kōng | empty; Buddhist emptiness (śūnyatā) |
The real culture behind it
虚 and 空 both mean empty. Together they form the Buddhist word for space or the void (Sanskrit ākāśa), and each half carries a philosophy: 空 is the emptiness of the Heart Sutra’s “form is emptiness, emptiness is form” (色即是空,空即是色), while 虚 is the stillness of the Daodejing’s “attain the utmost emptiness” (致虚极).
The localisers answered in Latin: inanis means “empty” or “void”, the root of English “inane”. One reading, ours: naming a benefactor “the Void” leaves it open whether she is nothing at all or the space in which everything happens — Buddhist emptiness was never mere absence.
