The real culture behind it

白 summons the most famous snake in Chinese literature: Bai Suzhen, the white snake spirit of the Legend of the White Snake (白蛇传), who takes human form, marries a mortal and is imprisoned beneath Hangzhou’s Leifeng Pagoda; Feng Menglong’s 1624 story is the classic early version. 赤练 is a real snake, the red-banded snake of East Asia (赤链蛇, also written 赤练蛇), and 练 on its own means white silk, a ribbon of colour.

蟒 has its own court history: on Ming and Qing robes the python was the four-clawed cousin of the imperial dragon, and “python robes” (蟒袍) were worn by high officials. The weapon shares its white-and-red pairing with the boss Bai Chilian, Lady of the Twin Serpents; any link between them is not confirmed.
