Seven Stars

七星剑阵Qīxīng Jiànzhèn

Official name

A boss formation of seven swordsmen controlled by one “unified brain” group AI, shown in the Year of the Snake trailer. Chinese coverage says the swordsmen form the array by “stepping on the seven stars” (脚踏七星), and that its offence-defence transitions borrow the spirit of real Emei-school swordsmanship.

The real culture behind it

七星 in Chinese almost always means the seven stars of the Big Dipper (北斗七星), which wheels around the pole; the Shiji calls it the emperor’s chariot, and its handle was read as a clock of the seasons. Daoist priests trace its shape with their feet in a ritual walk called pacing the Dipper (步罡踏斗), which is why 脚踏七星, “stepping on the seven stars”, sounds liturgical — the Daoist link is our reading.

Wuxia readers will think of Jin Yong, whose Quanzhen Daoists fight in a Big Dipper formation (天罡北斗阵) in The Legend of the Condor Heroes: a comparison, not a developer claim. 剑阵, a sword array, is the genre’s term for swordsmen who move as one body — exactly what the group AI is built to do.
