The real culture behind it
昆仑 is the oldest sacred mountain in Chinese myth. The Classic of Mountains and Seas calls it “the earthly capital of the Lord on High” (帝之下都), and later lore made it the home of the Queen Mother of the West, keeper of the elixir of immortality. When Han envoys traced the Yellow River toward its source, Emperor Wu gave the name Kunlun to the mountains there, as the Shiji records, and the real range still carries it.
Wuxia brought the mountain down to earth as a sect: the Kunlun school is one of the six great orthodox sects in Jin Yong’s The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber. One reading, ours: a “Kunlun renegade” falls from two heights at once, the myth and the martial order.
