Chief Disciple of the Seven Stars

大师兄Dà Shīxiōng

Name via press

Leader of the Seven Stars sword formation, a side-content boss first shown in the Year of the Snake trailer. In phase two, “Chief Disciple’s Fallen Hope”, his surviving disciples work him like a marionette on crimson threads; the Chinese plates (七星剑阵:大师兄, 大师兄的绝望剑意) are fan readings.

The real culture behind it

大师兄 is “eldest senior brother”. A Chinese martial school is organised like a family: the master is 师父, “teacher-father”, and disciples rank themselves by the order in which they joined, so the first to enter leads the rest. Wuxia’s most famous 大师兄 is Linghu Chong, eldest disciple of the Mount Hua school in Jin Yong’s The Smiling, Proud Wanderer.

Soulframe Liang says Gu Long’s characters — “mad inside, cold outside” (内心是癫的,但外表是冷的) — shaped this one. His second phase draws on puppet theatre, one of the folk arts Liang names; the Tang encyclopedia Tongdian says puppet plays began as funeral music. One reading, ours: an eldest brother worked on red strings by his own juniors turns that family order, and that ritual art, upside down.
