Yu'er
玉儿Yù'ér
A brewer’s daughter who wants her father saved; she recurs through the story and aids Soul with medicine (Shacknews, GosuGamers). Chinese press mentions a quest called 玉儿采药 (“Yu’er gathers herbs”), so the spelling 玉儿 is likely but not officially confirmed.
What the name means
| Character | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 玉 | yù | jade |
| 儿 | ér | child; a diminutive in pet names |
The real culture behind it
玉 is jade, the stone Chinese culture prized above gold: the Book of Rites says the gentleman “compares his virtue to jade” (君子比德于玉). 儿 turns it into a pet name — “little Jade” — the way families have long called their daughters.
One detail fits her neatly (our reading): the traditional character for medicine, 醫, has the wine-jar component 酉 at its base, and the Shuowen jiezi explains why: “wine is what heals illness” (酒所以治病也). A brewer’s daughter who brings Soul medicine stands where those two crafts meet. Even her quest title has a poetic pedigree in Jia Dao’s famous quatrain about a hermit who has “gone to gather herbs” (采药去) somewhere deep in the mountain clouds.
