What the name means
| Character | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 暗 | àn | dark, hidden |
| 魔 | mó | demon (from Māra) |
| 天 | tiān | heaven, sky |
| 堡 | bǎo | fortress, fortified stronghold |
The real culture behind it
Read character by character, 暗魔天堡 is “dark — demon — heaven — fortress”. 堡 is a fortified stronghold, the word for the walled forts and fortified villages that studded Ming China’s northern frontier, and 暗 adds darkness or secrecy, the 暗 of 暗杀, “assassination”.
魔 and 天 together have Buddhist roots: Māra, the tempter, was said to rule from the highest heaven of the desire realm, which is why he is called the “Demon King of the Sixth Heaven” (第六天魔王). One reading, ours: the name fuses citadel and temple, a demon’s heaven with walls. In Phantom Blade 2 the Bastion’s lord was 魔天, “demon heaven”; Zero’s lord is Mó Yuan.
