The Order
组织Zǔzhī
The “elusive but powerful organization” Soul served as an elite assassin until he was framed for killing its patriarch (PlayStation Blog, 2023). Chinese coverage calls it simply 组织, “the organization”, and previews describe The Hunt, a former comrade who now hunts Soul on its behalf.
What the name means
| Character | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 组 | zǔ | to braid, assemble; originally a silk cord |
| 织 | zhī | to weave |
The real culture behind it
组织 is the plainest word Chinese has for an organisation. It first meant weaving — 组 is a silk cord, 织 to weave — and modern Chinese took it over, via Japanese, to translate “organization”. One reading, ours: a secret order called only “the organization” sounds like something whose real name you are not meant to know.
No developer source ties it to a real group, but late-imperial China had every ingredient: the Ming Embroidered Uniform Guard (锦衣卫, formalised 1382) and the eunuch-run Eastern Depot (东厂, 1420), who arrested and tortured outside the regular courts; outlawed sects such as White Lotus; and oath-bound brotherhoods such as the Heaven and Earth Society. Wuxia made the assassin hunted by his own order a stock plot — the one Soul’s story starts from.
