Phantom World

影境Yǐngjìng

Official name

The setting: in Soulframe Liang’s words “basically a fantasy version of China”, its period “more or less the Ming Dynasty–namely the 14th century to 16th century” (IGN, 2023), blended with steampunk, cyberpunk, dark fantasy and horror. It is original fiction, not a historical setting.

What the name means

CharacterPinyinMeaning
影yǐngshadow; reflection, image — hence “phantom”
境jìngborder; realm; in Buddhism, a state or object of perception

The real culture behind it

影 is a shadow, but also a reflection or an image: a reflection in water is 倒影, and film, 电影, is literally an “electric shadow”. That sense of illusion is why the series’ English uses phantom. 境 began as a border (边境, a frontier), widened into a realm, and in Buddhist usage names the objects and states of perception — the 境 of 境界 and 梦境, “dreamscape”.

One reading, ours: “shadow realm” fits Liang’s description closely — a China seen as its own shadow, recognisable in its towns, rites and weapons, and deliberately warped by steam towers and mechanical bodies no Ming city ever had. The game is original fiction; the history is in the materials it is built from.
