影之刃零: Phantom Blade Zero's Chinese Name Explained
影之刃零Yǐngzhīrèn Líng
What does 影之刃零 mean? Phantom Blade Zero's Chinese title character by character (影, 之, 刃, 零) with pinyin and audio, why it's “Zero” and the series' Chinese names.
Key facts
- 影之刃零 (Yǐngzhīrèn Líng) is Phantom Blade Zero's official Chinese title; read literally, it means “Blade of Shadow: Zero”.
- 影 is shadow, 之 the classical “of”, 刃 a blade or cutting edge, and 零 zero, a character built on 雨, rain.
- “Zero” marks a fresh start: Soulframe Liang calls the game the spiritual rebirth of his indie game Rainblood (雨血), and its 2016 codename was 影之刃Zero.
- The developer S-GAME is 灵游坊 (Língyóufāng) in Chinese; the series' titles run from 雨血 to 影之刃 to 影之刃零.
- All four characters are identical in Simplified and Traditional Chinese, so the title is written the same way in mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Yingzhiren Ling (影之刃零Yǐngzhīrèn Líng) is the Chinese title of Phantom Blade Zero, and it translates literally as “Blade of Shadow: Zero”: 影 shadow, 之 of, 刃 blade, 零 zero. “Phantom Blade” is a slightly more spectral rendering of 影之刃, and “Zero” is a straight translation of 零. The official English title is also styled Phantom Blade Ø or Phantom Blade 0.
Four characters, each with a long history. Here is what every one of them means, why the series went back to zero, and how to say the whole thing out loud.
影之刃零, character by character
| Character | Pinyin | Listen | Core meaning | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 影 | yǐng | 影 | shadow, reflection, image | Originally written 景; the 彡 strokes were added around the 4th century |
| 之 | zhī | 之 | of (classical possessive) | Gives the title a literary, bookish ring |
| 刃 | rèn | 刃 | blade, cutting edge | A dot on 刀 (knife) marks where the edge is |
| 零 | líng | 零 | zero; originally falling rain | Built from 雨 (rain) over 令 |
影: shadow, and the “phantom” in the title
影 means a shadow, but also a reflection or image: 倒影 is a reflection in water, and the modern word for film, 电影, is literally “electric shadows”. That ghostly range is why “phantom” works as a translation. S-GAME leans on that sense: the setting is 影境 (影境Yǐngjìng), the Phantom World, and the official site calls the secondary weapons 影之武装, the Phantom Edges.
The character itself is a late arrival. Early texts wrote “shadow” as 景, the same character as “light”; Zhuangzi’s parable of the penumbra questioning the shadow uses it. The 6th-century scholar Yan Zhitui recorded that it was Ge Hong’s dictionary Ziyuan, in the Jin dynasty, that first added the three strokes 彡 to make a separate 影. A shadow, in other words, was split off from light.
之: the classical “of”
之 is the possessive particle of Classical Chinese, the equivalent of “of” or an apostrophe-s. Modern speech would say 影的刃; using 之 instead makes the title sound like a phrase from an old book, the register wuxia loves. You meet the same particle in Mencius’s 浩然之气, “the flood-like qi”.
刃: the edge that names every blade
刃 is a textbook example of an indicative character (指事): take 刀, a knife, and add a dot to point at the cutting edge. The Shuowen jiezi (c. 100 CE) defines it as “the hardness of a knife” and says it shows “a knife with its edge”. The most famous edge in Chinese literature belongs to Cook Ding, the butcher in Zhuangzi:
今臣之刀十九年矣,所解数千牛矣,而刀刃若新发于硎。
I have had this knife for nineteen years and cut up thousands of oxen with it, yet its edge is as fresh as if it had just come from the grindstone.
Note that 刃 is not a weapon type. A 剑 is a straight sword and a 刀 a sabre, but 刃 is the edge itself, and by extension any blade (白刃, a bare blade; 兵刃, edged weapons). So 影之刃 never commits to sword or sabre, which suits a game with more than 30 primary weapons. That last point is our reading, not S-GAME’s.
零: zero, with rain on top
零 looks like a number, but it began as weather. It is a phonetic compound of 雨 (rain) and 令, and the Shuowen glosses it as a kind of rain, the light rain that falls. From “falling” it came to mean withering, as in Qu Yuan’s Li Sao: 惟草木之零落兮,恐美人之迟暮, “as grass and trees wither and fall, I fear the twilight of the fair one”. Then it meant remnants and small change (零钱), and only later the number zero.
Our own observation: the “zero” in the title literally carries rain. The series began as 雨血, Rainblood; Pangzhen, the game’s hub, is “perpetually rain-drenched”; and Soul’s journey, in the store’s words, runs “through rain and blood”. Whether or not that was planned, the character fits.
Why “Zero”? A rebirth, not a prequel
The title marks a return to the beginning. When the game was revealed in 2023, Liang described the series’ path on the PlayStation Blog: Rainblood “grew into a whole franchise and picked up a new name: Phantom Blade”, and Phantom Blade Zero is “the spiritual rebirth of the original Rainblood.”
The idea is older than the reveal. At a Rainblood anniversary concert in November 2016, S-GAME announced a remake with an extended plot under the codename 影之刃Zero; the project was paused in 2018 and revived in 2021. In August 2025 Liang explained what changed: the story keeps Rainblood’s framework, but “all character relationships and emotional motives are new”, and no prior knowledge is needed.
So the answer to “Is Phantom Blade 0 a prequel?” is no, not in the usual sense. 零 resets the counter on the original story rather than adding a number after Phantom Blade 3.

Dates for the earliest games vary by source: Rainblood was first shared in 2008, though Liang dates it to 2010, and one history places the first Phantom Blade in 2017 rather than 2014. Our series history covers the full timeline.
S-GAME’s Chinese name: 灵游坊
The studio behind all of these is 灵游坊 (灵游坊Língyóufāng). Character by character: 灵 is spirit, soul or nimbleness; 游 is to roam or to play (it is the first half of 游戏, “game”); and 坊 is a workshop or an old city ward, as in 作坊, a craftsman’s shop. “Workshop of roaming spirits” or “nimble-play workshop” are fair literal glosses. They are ours: we have not found an official explanation of the name.
The company’s legal names add one more layer. Its mainland entity is 北京灵游坊网络科技有限公司 (literally “Beijing Lingyoufang Network Technology Co.”), and the game’s rights holder is listed as PARAWULIN PRODUCTION LIMITED. That second name looks like a nod to “Para-Wulin”, the older fan-wiki English for 里武林, the hidden inner Wulin of the series’ world; the store’s English now speaks of “the Wulin and the Discordance” (表里武林, the outer and inner Wulin). The Para-Wulin link is our inference, not something S-GAME has stated.
How to say 影之刃零
Say it in two beats, YING-jr-ren / LING:
- 影 yǐng (影yǐng): third tone, a low dip; like “ying” in “sing” with a y.
- 之 zhī (之zhī): first tone, high and flat; “jr”, with the tongue curled back.
- 刃 rèn (刃rèn): fourth tone, falling sharply; the r sits halfway to the s in “measure”.
- 零 líng (零líng): second tone, rising; “ling”.
A plain-English approximation is “ying-jr-ren ling”. For every character name, place and term in the game, see our pronunciation guide.
The title, in the end, is a small poem: a shadow split from light, an edge that could belong to any blade, and a zero that still remembers the rain. That is a fair summary of a series that began in Rainblood’s downpour and came back to start over.
