The Wulin

武林wǔlínthe Wulin and the Discordance

Official name

The martial world Soul “roams” in the official premise, “determined to unravel a conspiracy that has ensnared the martial world”. The store also lists “the Wulin and the Discordance” (表里武林, the outer and inner Wulin); reading the Discordance as the hidden 里武林 is a fan inference.

The real culture behind it

武林, the “martial forest”, is the community of martial artists — narrower than jianghu, the whole world outside the court. 林 works as it does in 儒林, the “forest of scholars” of the novel The Scholars (儒林外史): a crowd of people who share a calling. Before fiction claimed it, Wulin was also a literary name for Hangzhou, as in Zhou Mi’s Old Affairs of Wulin (武林旧事).

表里 pairs surface and lining, as in 表里如一, “the same inside and out”. An outer and an inner Wulin suggest a public martial order with a hidden one beneath it; S-GAME has not spelled this out. Our inference: the rights-holder name PARAWULIN echoes “Para-Wulin”, older fan-wiki English for 里武林. The Chinese tagline calls it a Wulin of “lost order and the Dharma’s end” (失序末法).
