What the name means

CharacterPinyinMeaning
魔módemon; short for 魔罗, the Buddhist tempter Māra
渊yuāna deep, whirling pool; abyss

The real culture behind it

魔 entered Chinese with Buddhism as short for 魔罗, the Sanskrit Māra, the tempter who tried to stop the Buddha’s awakening. Anything that clouds the mind or blocks practice is a 魔 — which is why wuxia’s worst fate is 走火入魔, “the fire runs wild and the demon gets in”. 渊 is a deep pool with an eddy at its centre (the Shuowen’s 回水), the root of 深渊, “abyss”; the Classic of Poetry warns of living “as if at the edge of a deep abyss” (如临深渊).

In Phantom Blade 2 the Bastion’s lord was 魔天, “demon heaven”; one reading, ours, is that the rename moves him from the heavens to the depths. Liang hints that the last fight may be won only by “forgetting everything”, which Jin Yong readers will hear as Zhang Sanfeng’s Taiji Sword lesson in The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber — an echo, not a confirmed source.
