Maskwalkers

怪面guàimiàn

Name via press

“Corrupted individuals who have traded their sanity (and faces) for greater power”, in Shacknews’ review. Their Chinese name is unconfirmed: 怪面 is our inference from 怪面之乱, “the masked uprising”, which Soulframe Liang uses for a catastrophe of the Rainblood era.

The real culture behind it

Masks are the game’s moral code. Art director Michael says they stand for the jianghu’s disguise, confinement and repression: almost every fallen villain appears masked, while the unmasked are the xia who keep their hearts. A faction that has literally traded its faces for power takes that rule to its end.

The tradition behind it is old. Nuo (傩) exorcism, described in the Rites of Zhou, sent a masked officiant with four golden eyes through every house to drive out pestilence, and masked nuo dancers still go door to door in Jiangxi villages at Spring Festival. Peking opera turned masks into paint: Cao Cao’s white face marks a man who never shows his true one. One reading, ours: nuo inverts here — in the rite, the mask turns a villager into a god; in Phantom Blade Zero, it marks the fall.
