Sha-Chi

杀气shāqì

Name via press

Killing intent: one gauge that serves as both stamina and posture, for Soul and for every enemy. Attacks, guarding and blocking spend it, an empty gauge leaves a fighter broken open, and switching weapons refills it on a cooldown.

The real culture behind it

Long before wuxia, 杀气 was weather. The Book of Rites says that in the second month of autumn “the killing air grows ever stronger, and the yang air weakens day by day” (杀气浸盛,阳气日衰): autumn was the season of withering and, by long custom, of executions (秋决). Tang frontier poets piled it into battle clouds, and in Romance of the Three Kingdoms it shows on Zhou Yu’s face at a banquet lined with hidden axe-men.

Wuxia fiction made it a sixth sense: a master feels killing intent before the blade moves, and a true assassin learns to hide it. Phantom Blade Zero turns that sense into a resource you spend, refill and read in your enemies. It is not 煞气 (shàqì), the baleful energy of feng shui that English books also spell “sha chi”.
