Transcension

杀气改造shāqì gǎizào

Official name

The official English for 杀气改造, “Sha-Chi modification”: factions in the Phantom World amplify Sha-Chi artificially, and reviews report that the subjects pay with their sanity and “essentially always turn feral”.

The real culture behind it

The English name reaches for “transcendence”, and Chinese religion has a long record of seeking it through the body. Daoist outer alchemy (外丹) brewed elixirs of cinnabar and mercury for immortality, and several Tang emperors are traditionally believed to have died of them. The game’s Chinese tagline speaks of proving the Way with one’s own body (以身证道) in a Dharma-ending age (末法).

Wuxia already had a word for power that turns on its owner: 走火入魔, the cultivator whose energy runs wild until “the demon gets in”. Transcension reads like that fear industrialised, inner energy forced upward in a steam-age workshop. The comparison is ours, not the developer’s, but it is kungfupunk in miniature.
