蓝光 / 红光lánguāng / hóngguāng

Name via press

Phantom Blade Zero’s colour-coded enemy attacks. Blue “Brutal” moves can be blocked at a heavy Sha-Chi cost or parried into a Ghostep; red “Killer” moves cannot be blocked or parried, but a last-moment dodge also triggers Ghostep.

The real culture behind it

Reading an attack before it lands is the oldest problem in swordsmanship. The Zhuangzi’s “Discourse on Swords” (说剑) gives the classic answer: “show him emptiness, open with an advantage, set off after him and arrive before him” (示之以虚,开之以利,后之以发,先之以至). The last two clauses became the martial maxim 后发先至, “move second, arrive first”: the logic of every parry-into-Ghostep exchange.

The colours are the game’s own convention, and they cut against an older code. In Beijing opera face painting, red marks loyalty and courage (Guan Yu) and blue marks fierce, unruly heroes, while Phantom Blade Zero makes red the colour of its deadliest blows. Liang traces the defensive design to Hong Kong kung fu films, where fighters are “all attacking while defending”.
