Chain Sickle
追命锁镰Zhuīmìng Suǒlián
The weapon of The Hunt, Soul’s former comrade turned Order hunter, and a Phantom Edge with long-reach attacks that doubles as a grappling hook in exploration. Its Chinese name is inferred from Chinese coverage.
What the name means
| Character | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 追命 | zhuīmìng | chase down a life; likely The Hunt’s Chinese name |
| 锁 | suǒ | lock; chain |
| 镰 | lián | sickle |
The real culture behind it
The chain-and-sickle pairing is best documented in Japan, as the kusarigama; Chinese writes it 锁镰, the same word in this weapon’s reported name. China’s own chain family is the rope dart (绳镖) and meteor hammer (流星锤), and its best-documented grappling weapon is the rope-borne iron flying claw (飞爪) illustrated in the Ming Wubei zhi for snaring men and horses.
Wuxia readers will hear another echo in 追命, “life-chaser”: it is the name of one of the Four Great Constables (四大名捕) in Wen Ruian’s novels, a hard-drinking constable famed for his kicks. A hunter named like a constable fits The Hunt neatly; the comparison is ours.
