炼邪Liànxié
A weaponsmith, the “goddess of the anvil” in Shacknews’ review; fan readings of the menus credit her with the Sanguine Twin and Sanguine Reach. The Chinese name 炼邪 is a fan pairing and unconfirmed.
What the name means
| Character | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 炼 | liàn | to refine metal with fire; also Daoist alchemy (炼丹) |
| 邪 | xié | evil, heterodox, uncanny |
The real culture behind it
炼 is to refine metal with fire — the 炼 of 百炼钢, “hundred-refined steel”, hammered and folded until its weight stops dropping — and also the 炼 of Daoist elixir alchemy, 炼丹. 邪 means evil, heterodox or uncanny. “Refining evil” is an unsettling name for a smith.
One echo, ours: 邪 is also the second character of Mo Ye (莫邪, read yé there), the legendary woman swordsmith who forged a pair of swords with her husband Gan Jiang. In the Wu Yue Chunqiu the metal would not flow until she cast her hair and nail clippings into the furnace; later retellings have her leap in herself. A “goddess of the anvil” with 邪 in her name stands close to that story.
