The real culture behind it
天, Heaven, is the moral order of the Chinese cosmos: emperors ruled by its mandate (天命), and Mencius warned that “those who follow Heaven survive; those who defy Heaven perish” (顺天者存,逆天者亡). The difficulty’s Chinese name, 逆天者, is literally the man Mencius said would perish.
Modern Chinese has flipped the word. 逆天 now praises anything absurdly strong, a 逆天操作 being a play that “defies heaven”, and web fiction is full of heroes who 逆天改命, defy heaven and change their fate. Liang reached for the same idea when he said the original 9/9 release date carried a sense of “reversing fate, overturning heaven’s order” (逆转命运、倒反天罡). Note the English goes the other way: a Hellwalker walks down into hell rather than up against heaven.
