The real culture behind it

局 began at the game board: a match of Go or Chinese chess is 一局, and the position on the board a 棋局. From there it spread to any situation (局面), and a deadlock is a 僵局. To 破局 is to break a stalemate everyone else has accepted.

Go has a famous legend about time: the woodcutter Wang Zhi stops to watch boys playing, and when the game ends his axe handle has rotted away and his generation has passed (烂柯). Wuxia has the great 破局 scene: in Jin Yong’s Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils the monk Xuzhu solves the unsolvable Zhenlong Go problem (珍珑棋局) by playing a stone that kills a large group of his own, which opens the board. Breaking a deadlock can mean sacrificing what you hold.
