The real culture behind it
Chinese folk religion pictures death as forgetting. On the road to rebirth the dead cross the Bridge of Helplessness (奈何桥) and drink Meng Po’s soup (孟婆汤), which wipes away every memory of the life just ended, and the red spider lily (彼岸花) is said to bloom along that road. A flower that makes a man on borrowed time stronger by remembering turns the image around; that reading is ours.
The philosophers went the other way. The Zhuangzi praises 坐忘, “sitting and forgetting”, shedding body and knowledge to merge with the Way, and Jin Yong’s Zhang Sanfeng teaches Taiji sword by asking his pupil to forget every form he has just been shown. In the game’s economy memory is strength; in the wuxia canon, forgetting is mastery.
