Remnant Dust
意识尘埃yìshí chén'āi
A currency. The English name is official (PlayStation Store): the pre-order accessory Treasure Basin “increases Remnant Dust drop rate by 10%”. The Chinese 意识尘埃 is a fan reading of the menus.
What the name means
| Character | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 意识 | yìshí | consciousness; in Buddhism, the sixth (mind) consciousness |
| 尘埃 | chén'āi | dust; in Buddhism, the defiling “dust” of the senses |
The real culture behind it
Both halves of the name are Buddhist. 意识 is the sixth of the six consciousnesses, the mind that knows thoughts as the eye knows colours; 尘 is the “dust” of the senses, the six objects (六尘) that cloud the mind. The most famous dust in Chinese is in the Platform Sutra: Shenxiu urged polishing the mirror of the mind “so no dust can gather”, and Huineng replied, “Originally there is not a single thing; where could dust alight?” (本来无一物,何处惹尘埃).
A currency made of “consciousness dust”, gathered in a world of mind-wrecking Transcension under a tagline about the Dharma-ending age (末法), fits that vocabulary uncannily well; the reading is ours. The Treasure Basin (聚宝盆) that boosts it is the folk cornucopia that multiplies whatever is put in.
