The real culture behind it
残 cuts two ways in Chinese: it means broken or left over (残缺, a remnant) and it means cruel (残暴, 残忍). A blade called “broken steel” that tears wounds open carries both senses at once; the double reading is ours.
钢 has a proud history. From the Han dynasty, Chinese smiths turned cast iron into steel by puddling (炒钢) and refined it by folding and forge-welding it again and again, the origin of “hundred-times-refined steel” (百炼钢). What they did not do was serrate it: saw-toothed edges were never standard on the military dao, which was built to chop and draw-cut cleanly. Jagged Steel sits firmly on the kungfupunk side of the ledger.
