The real culture behind it
Axes are among China’s oldest weapons, and the broad bronze axe, the 钺 (yuè), was a symbol of the power to punish. The Shang queen and general Fu Hao was buried at Anyang with great bronze yue bearing her name, and some scholars read the oracle-bone form of 王, “king”, as the picture of an axe blade.
Fiction made the axe the weapon of the wild man. In the Water Margin, Li Kui, the “Black Whirlwind” (黑旋风), charges into battle with a pair of broad axes, and Sui–Tang storytelling gave Cheng Yaojin three famous axe strokes, still an idiom (程咬金三板斧) for someone whose bag of tricks runs out fast. A charged, shield-smashing axe belongs to that lineage of brute force; the reading is ours.
