What the name means
| Character | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 万 | wàn | ten thousand |
| 钧 | jūn | an ancient weight of thirty jin |
| 巨锤客 | jùchuí kè | “giant-hammer man” |
The real culture behind it
钧 is an ancient unit of weight: the Shuowen jiezi sets one jun at thirty jin (斤). 万钧, “ten thousand jun”, is Chinese shorthand for overwhelming force, as in the idiom 雷霆万钧, “the might of thunder and ten thousand jun”; its cousin 千钧一发, “a thousand jun hanging by a hair”, means mortal danger. A hammer giant could hardly be named more literally.
His weapon, read by fans as 长柄金瓜, “long-handled golden melon”, has a real ancestor: melon-headed maces descend from the guduo (骨朵) and were carried by palace honour guards from the Song onward, hence the popular name 金瓜. 巨锤客 simply means “giant-hammer man”.
