Drunken Sword

醉剑zuìjiànThe Fanatic’s Broken Blade

Name via press

Hua Qianxiao’s weapon. Drinking restores Sha-Chi and moves Soul through “Tipsy” and “Drunk” states in which attacks turn into thrown flying swords; the alternative name, The Fanatic’s Broken Blade (痴者残剑), is a fan reading of the menus.

The real culture behind it

Drunken styles (醉拳, 醉剑) are real and codified: the Drunken Eight Immortals (醉八仙) routine gives each of the Eight Immortals a tipsy technique of their own, and Jackie Chan’s Drunken Master (1978) made the stagger world-famous. The trick is the same in every version: feigned stumbles that hide balance, timing and a sudden strike.

The flying swords belong to fiction, above all to fantasy epics such as Huanzhulouzhu’s The Swordsmen of Mount Shu (蜀山剑侠传, serialised from the 1930s), where blades fly across the sky. And 残剑, “Broken Sword”, is also Tony Leung Chiu-wai’s assassin in Zhang Yimou’s Hero (2002); whether the menu name nods to him is only our guess.
