Freezing Chaos (刺骨混沌 on the Chinese menu) is a one-handed primary weapon and a late-game prize: it drops from Yucong, No. 34 Twisted Puppet, whose closing cutscene ends on the new-weapon card. Guides disagree on where. KeenGamer says Crimson Forest, on a late return: finish the Triple Threat tale, obtain the Blazing Edge, then beat Yucong in the Mirrorwood rematch. Game Rant says to come back after entering Mirage Estate, at the north-east edge of the map, and Fextralife lists Mirage Estate. The card: “Honed to sever all things, the blade rises with bone-chilling frost and falls with black flame that scorches the heavens.” At level 1 it read Damage 408, Guard Break 214 in Ben-Gun’s capture; a Chinese level-30 card reads 1264, with a status-effect rating of 562.

Three forms (item card). The Standard Combo is five light attacks and the Sha-Chi Combo three heavy presses. Threefold Shift (L1 + Triangle) spends Sha-Chi to switch forms with a strong slash. Steel (钢刃) has the highest attack and Guard Break. Chaos (混沌) sets enemies alight with Chaotic Flame that keeps draining HP and Sha-Chi, and every heavy attack leaves a floating chaotic flame on the field. Frost (寒冰) builds Chill until the enemy freezes. The Power Surge, Chaos Erosion (混沌侵蚀), spends one Sha-Chi Essence on an unblockable chain through all three forms.

Upgrades (Chinese card). Level 5, 碎钢突刺: hold heavy in Steel form for a long-range thrust that cuts deep into Sha-Chi. Level 15, 冰山 (Iceberg): hold heavy in Frost form for ice-shattering slashes; frozen enemies take more damage and weak ones shatter. Level 25, 黑火龙卷 (Blackflame Whirlwind): hold heavy in Chaos form to absorb every floating flame; with 13 or more it becomes a burning vortex, stronger with each flame up to 60. Level 30, 入骨三分·之三: switching forms greatly speeds Sha-Chi recovery for 3 seconds.

The real culture behind it

Hundun (混沌) is chaos before form. In Zhuangzi (“Ying di wang”, 應帝王) the Emperor of the Centre, Hundun, has none of the seven openings that let humans see, hear, eat and breathe. His friends, the emperors of the South and North Seas, bore one hole a day to repay his kindness, “and on the seventh day Hundun died”. The Classic of Mountains and Seas describes a god, Dijiang, who is “hundun, without face or eyes”. It is a pointed name for the prize of a puppet whose faces change: Chinese players call the Three-Faced Puppet’s masks the Frost, Steel and Chaos faces, the same three forms the sword switches between. That link is our inference.

刺骨 is the ordinary Chinese for cold that cuts to the bone. The level-30 trait, 入骨三分 (“three fen into the bone”), plays on the idiom 入木三分, “three fen into the wood”, from the Tang story that Wang Xizhi’s ink soaked three fen into a wooden board. The sword itself is a straight one-handed blade with flame-scroll engraving and a row of red studs; we found no single historical model, and the game names none.

Freezing Chaos: FAQ

Q01How do you get Freezing Chaos in Phantom Blade Zero?
Defeat Yucong, No. 34 Twisted Puppet; the card appears after the closing cutscene. KeenGamer ties it to the Triple Threat tale (get the Blazing Edge, then the Mirrorwood rematch in Crimson Forest); Game Rant and Fextralife point to Mirage Estate.
Q02What are Freezing Chaos’s three forms?
Steel has the highest attack and Guard Break; Chaos burns enemies with flame that drains HP and Sha-Chi and leaves floating flames; Frost builds Chill until the enemy freezes. L1 + Triangle switches between them.
Q03Is Freezing Chaos good?
Its numbers are among the highest we have seen for a one-handed weapon (Damage 1264 at level 30 on a Chinese card), and Chinese players call it a top-stat weapon. It asks you to juggle three forms.
Q04What does 刺骨混沌 mean?
“Bone-piercing chaos”. 刺骨 is the everyday word for biting cold; 混沌 is primal chaos, which Zhuangzi pictures as a faceless emperor. The level-30 trait 入骨三分 plays on the idiom 入木三分.
